It allows emission reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2. CERs can be traded, sold and used by industrialised countries to meet part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol. JI is also a mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol. It allows countries with an emission reduction or limitation commitment under the Kyoto Protocol to earn emission reduction units (ERUs), each equivalent to one tonne of CO2.
